Join us for a keynote by new Concordia faculty member Kate De Medeiros.
Minimizing risk is often a goal of aging programs and services. Although risk typically carries negative connotations linked to personal harm or adverse outcomes, the value of everyday risks is typically overlooked. The term itself evolved from the Italian word risicare meaning to dare or to venture.
Daring to embark on a new friendship, venturing into the creative arts are all examples of risks that can bring meaningful rewards, not because of their guaranteed success but because of the potential for failure. Overall, I argue that meaningful activity involves a degree of risk that should be encouraged rather than eliminated and suggest ways for rethinking in later life.
